The Louvre or the Louvre Museum , is the world's most-visited museum and a historic monument in Paris, France.
It is the home of many of the most known work of arts, including the Mona Lisa. A central landmark of the city, it is located on the Right Bank of the Seine in the city's 1st arrondissement.
Approximately 38,000 objects from prehistory to the 21st century are exhibited over an area of 72,735 square meters (782,910 square feet).
Nonetheless, the Louvre still topped the list of most-visited art museums in the world in 2020.
The museum was opened on August 10, 1793, when 537 paintings were exhibited,
most of which belonged to confiscated royal and church property.
Due to the structural problems of the Louvre building, the museum was closed from 1796 to 1801.
Under Napoleon, the collections were significantly enlarged and the museum itself was named after him (Musée Napoléon).
After Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, many of the looted works were returned to their previous owners. Show less
